Working to save stray dogs in the North East

Desperate Dogs

We believe that all dogs no matter what their age or state of health should be given a chance, looking at the before and after stories of dogs on this page makes this so worthwhile.

Although we appreciate all support given, we frequently do need to ask for a little extra help. Often some dogs require expensive continuing treatment which the charity struggles to afford.

Our average vet bills are £1500 a month and rising. This we feel is the reason why a lot of these dogs are sadly abandoned and come in to our care.

The dogs all give so much back in return so if you can help in any way such as holding a coffee morning etc please do contact us.

Thank you for reading our Desperate Dogs page which will include dogs in need of special support and dogs that have been waiting for a home for some time.

Dogs Still Waiting - please can you help?

As part of our work dogs are placed in foster homes or boarded at private kennels until they find a new home, sadly there are some dogs for whom finding a new home takes a long time and rather than letting them slip to the back we will include their details here to raise awareness of their plight.

The Life of Riley

A member of the public was told by a youth that a little dog was down a manhole on a derelict piece of land. Luckily she went to investigate and found she could hear a dog but not see it. The police were called and then the fire brigade so that one of the officers could climb down into the man hole. He arrived back up holding a little blind, emaciated dog covered in slime and dirt. A piece of rope round the dogs neck.

The dog warden arrived and after a visit to the vet took the dog to the local dog pound. They immediately phoned Save our Strays and Margaret went to collect him , even then there was a wag of the tail on hearing her voice.

A foster home was found but the instant Jane the carer saw the little dog she said she was going to give him a permanent home and that she was going to call him Riley, because from now on thats the life he will have. Riley is now a very happy little dog in his new home. He plays with his toys and the other dogs who are now his friends, he wags his tail constantly.

The vet has confirmed that Riley is totally blind and sadly nothing can be done to restore his sight. With care and love we hope he will forget that awful time and with good food and the extra cream rice pudding he loves he will continue to gain weight.

One shudders to think what may of happened to him and indeed how he ended up in the manhole.
